I would rather beat the Yankees regularly than pitch a no hit game.

Frontier Field

We saw the Yankees Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Farm Team play the Rochester Red Wings at Frontier Field tonight. The company my dad works for was having their annual Red Wings outing where everyone gets food, drinks and decent seats at the game. It’s always a good time and this year was no exception. Rachel and I went with my parents and my niece Cassandra. Unfortunately the Red Wings Lost, but don’t worry, we’re going back again tomorrow and they’re sure to win then!

Achtung!

It has come to my attention that many people who watch this blog may not realize that I maintain another (more technical) blog. I don’t expect it to be interesting to everyone (or anyone really), I would just like to let everyone know that it exists.

My Blog

We are Media

Today’s Media sources are truly impressive. The pure amount of information available and the ways in which to get it are just astounding. After struggling for a long time I started with a blog. That helped, then I discovered Google Reader and that helped a little more. I then installed a wiki which only I have access to. That helped me manage my ideas and organize thoughts and helped a lot.

But today… today my good friend Tim let me in on a little secret. Google Reader’s shared items. I’ve always seen the feature sitting there and not really paid much attention to it. I noticed he had added his Google Reader’s shared items application to his facebook profile.

Suddenly, Like Robert Scoble, I am Media. I share lots of things I find all over the internet via lots of different tools. instant messages (or should i say Pidgin?) E-mail, In-person (gasp!), and our Blog. Recently I’ve been struggling with how to share these things efficiently. For a while I posted a lot of videos on our Blog. I don’t like this. The blog is supposed to be our thoughts and how people can keep up on what we’re doing. It had become a place to keep up on what we’re reading/watching. I didn’t want to use my site because that’s intended to be more of a professional atmosphere where I share projects, ideas and thoughts I have dealing strictly with the software industry (or wherever I end up).

Well now I’ve found my mechanism. If you are interested my shared items can be found here. There’s even a feed for those of you who like that idea. Also it’s now displayed on our website in a sidebar widget.

RaR day 1

First of all we just want to say thanks to everyone who brought down the house last night. We had some mighty fine dancers out there (you know who you are 😉 ). As our first act as husband and wife we would like to announce the MVP award. And the winner is… (the choice was obvious…) Uncle Jerry for his outstanding dance numbers. Thanks Uncle Jerry for making our first decision together as husband and wife so easy. We haven’t had that much fun… ever. To see all of our friends and family celebrating our love with such enthusiasm touched our hearts in a way we’ll never forget.

Check out some of the first available candid shots from yesterday here.

Thanks to everyone, we love you,
Mr and Mrs Aldrich

WordPress 2.2

I’ve taken the plunge.  For one its speedy.  Secondly it includes the widgets plug-in which is nice (although I was already using it).  The biggest difference I can see is the speed improvement.  However this was the first opportunity I had to test my new DEV server procedure.  I’ve had WordPress 2.2 on http://dev.aldrichfamily.org since about 5 minutes after it was released.  I’ve played around a little bit, made sure all the plug-ins I want to use still work.  After I was sure I had a database backup of the current install (via the daily scheduled backups now) I decided it was time to take the plunge.  Probably the easiest upgrade thus far.

Be Excellent Unto Each Other

If you didn’t notice the site had a little hiccup last night. I installed MediaWiki and wasn’t happy with the results. Apparently MediaWiki requires a lot of directory permissions to be setup correctly. I decided to remove it and drop the database. I went to my powweb mysql page and clicked on the last database and clicked ‘drop’. Immediately after dropping the database I realized what i had done. I had dropped the wrong database because they’re listed alphabetically, not in the order in which they were added.

Immediately I picked up the phone and called Powweb (my hosting provider). While waiting on hold I decided to use their ‘live chat’ service. I logged onto that and let the person know what had happened. By this time I had someone on the phone as well and let them know what had happened. The person on the phone told me that I was basically SOL and they don’t keep any Backups. I was dumbfounded and hung up, continuing to talk to the person on Live Chat. After a few minutes they let me know that a technician would restore my database and they would let me know by either phone or E-mail (my choice) once it had been restored.

I just received the phone call this morning and although I lost two posts, I’m a very happy Customer! Thank YOU POWWEB! A+ for your Live Chat support however; an F for your phone support.

Needless to say I’ve used the new cron feature in wordpress to schedule nightly backups. It’s pretty sweet, the Backup can be E-mailed to you.

Zippy Photos

You may have noticed but I’ve re-added a link to our photo albums. This link now points to a temporary website which is running Zippy Photos. If you notice any weird behavior with the site please let me know. There will be lots of changes coming to it soon. Hopefully within a few days I’ll have it integrated into WordPress but for now its an external site.

Mets 1 Yankees 0

Friday I drove down to Poughkeepsie to see Charles for his birthday. After arriving we went straight to the city to meet some friends of his and goto the Mets game. The Mets won. The game had nothing to do with the Yankees I just like to taunt Yankee fans. After the game we met up with Sanjay for a lesson in expensive drinking and a place to stay.

Saturday Charles headed back to Poughkeepsie while I headed to the International Car Show with Sanjay. Check out the 2008 Ferrari for a sample. I’ll post a link to the whole gallery once the photo gallery comes back up. After the car show we met my Brother for sushi at Lan and had probably the best sushi I’ve ever had. After dinner my brother and I went to one of NYC’s oldest pubs McSorley’s for some Beers. They only give you two options, Light or Dark McSorley’s and when you order a drink they always give you 2 instead of 1. After that it was time to catch the train back to Poughkeepsie so we said our good byes and headed out.

That’s my trip in a nutshell.

Behind every argument is someone’s ignorance

NOTE: Some of the internal links in this post are now dead. The pages they refer to no longer exist so they cannot be fixed.

Yesterday I decided that since I’m going the WordPress route I might as well migrate all of my old stuff from websites in the past. I began moving some things but I can’t decide how I want to deal with most of it. For the time being i’ve created a Quotes page and some sub pages. I can’t seem to figure out how to make Pages search-able, If that doesn’t happen they may not stay a Page. I also added some cigarette facts.
Friday on my walk to the parking garage from work I saw a Red Stripe bottle laying on the sidewalk. It made me think of some funny commercials I saw a while back. I couldn’t find a listing of them together so I created my own.
