That's one Ugly Baby!

Ten Ugly Men Festival

Last Saturday Rachel and I (and a bunch of friends) hit up the Ten Ugly Men Festival. For those of you who aren’t aware it’s an all day charity event that puts on music, food and drinks for $30 per person. We happened to win Tickets from the Zone so we got food, drink and music for the reasonable price of free! Lots of fun and we’ll definitely be attending next year. Will you?

We are Media

Today’s Media sources are truly impressive. The pure amount of information available and the ways in which to get it are just astounding. After struggling for a long time I started with a blog. That helped, then I discovered Google Reader and that helped a little more. I then installed a wiki which only I have access to. That helped me manage my ideas and organize thoughts and helped a lot.

But today… today my good friend Tim let me in on a little secret. Google Reader’s shared items. I’ve always seen the feature sitting there and not really paid much attention to it. I noticed he had added his Google Reader’s shared items application to his facebook profile.

Suddenly, Like Robert Scoble, I am Media. I share lots of things I find all over the internet via lots of different tools. instant messages (or should i say Pidgin?) E-mail, In-person (gasp!), and our Blog. Recently I’ve been struggling with how to share these things efficiently. For a while I posted a lot of videos on our Blog. I don’t like this. The blog is supposed to be our thoughts and how people can keep up on what we’re doing. It had become a place to keep up on what we’re reading/watching. I didn’t want to use my site because that’s intended to be more of a professional atmosphere where I share projects, ideas and thoughts I have dealing strictly with the software industry (or wherever I end up).

Well now I’ve found my mechanism. If you are interested my shared items can be found here. There’s even a feed for those of you who like that idea. Also it’s now displayed on our website in a sidebar widget.

Adventure must start with running away from home

On their way

This morning I woke up before dawn to take my parents to the airport for their first trip together ever. I know that sounds strange but you have to understand, They have three only children. They’ve basically been raising kids for the past 40+ years. Every vacation they’ve taken has been either with or for their kids.

In fact my parents are responsible for making me want to travel so much. For at least 10 days every summer(often longer) my parents would ship us off to some location for a family camping trip. We didn’t always go far, sometimes we’d just go to places nearby like Oneida Lake or Letchworth State Park. Other times we’d trek cross country to Mount Rushmore or Yellowstone National Park.

My parents gave up a lot while we were growing up. They’ve had this trip scheduled for almost a year and it wasn’t until 3 days ago I learned that this would be the first vacation they had taken together (alone), or even the first time they’d flown together. It’s funny the way people assume you realize or know things just because its what they consider common knowledge.

Thanks Mom and Dad, I owe you a lot.

Al Gore ain't got nuthin on wonderingmind42

This is quite possibly the best argument Nay discussion regarding Global Climate Change and its effects yet. You might say there are some holes in his discussion and this is quite possibly true. However; take a look at his other response videos. This video is an over simplified version and he goes into further details in the latter ones to resolve some of these holes.

I think he hit the nail on the head by stating that we can’t determine if Global Climate Change is real or not. What we can say is that regardless of how that turns out the world will be better off if we do something now before it’s too late.

If you don’t want to watch all of his videos at least watch this one and please pass it on if you find it interesting.

Bug Fixes

I have fixed several annoying bugs in ZippyPhotos one of which caused directories to be displayed in the wrong order. It amazes me how easy PHP is to work with every time I make a fix or add a feature.

I also added the ability to specify the number of items currently displayed in the RSS feed. Right now the default is set to 10 but like everything else in Zippy, it’s configurable via settings.php.

Life is what happens to you while you're busy making other plans

Gasoline 1, Bon Fire 0

Rachel and I have been up to a lot lately. For the 4th I ended up going to my friend Anthony’s for some fireworks and some general crazy pyro behavior. One bon fire lit with gasoline and a roman candle another lit with a gasoline trail.

Saturday I went fishing with Anthony and his father in Fairhaven bay. When I got home Rachel had steak, salt potatoes, corn and beer waiting. Yeah, she’s that awesome.

A Joust

Sunday we took our annual trip to the Sterling Renaissance Festival. On the way we got to see an awesome lightning storm. I wish I had my tripod it would have been perfect. The lightning started out at the horizon and then we drove right through it. While there we saw a few shows we weren’t able to catch last year but was overall uneventful. We have determined the next time we go will be with people that have not been yet, and we’ll probably dress up.
