I heard about the possible Tsunami hitting Hawaii on Saturday about an hour before the predicted time. As any photographically inclined programmer would do I went searching for some WebCams. Once I found some that were returning images (most were timing out or saying too many users) I decided it would be neat if I could capture the images over time and throw them together into a video later.
About 15 minutes later and WebCamTracker was born. It’s nothing fancy, just a small Java class that’ll pull down a single image or multiple from the specified URL. To run it just use:
java WebCamTracker <webcam URL> <output directory> <?Max Duration?> <?Delay?>
Fortunately (but unfortunately for the video) the Tsunami didn’t really amount to much in Hawaii. The video does however show the surges so it’s still pretty neat. I ran WebCamTracker on 3 WebCams: Kanaha, Sprecks, & Hilo Bay. They turned out pretty sweet even if they don’t show much wave action. Pretty good for my first time-lapse, even if I didn’t actually take the pictures myself. Something I might play with soon though…
Anyway, Check it out:
side note: Music by JukeBox the Ghost, one of my favorite bands.
Ricky Gervais was on The Daily Show Monday night and they showed a short clip from the new HBO show ‘The Ricky Gervais Show.’ It looked hilarious so I took a look around the net and was able to find some of the videos. The Space Monkey Monkey News video was particularly hilarious.
Rachel and I haven’t laughed this hard in years. Seriously, there were tears… Watch it!
It may be a little hard to follow unless you’re already familiar with Karl Pilkington or at least know he’s really this dumb. Then again we didn’t know anything about him until we saw some of the Ricky Gervais videos so you’ll probably do just fine too.
Technology is amazing.
I know Ultrasounds aren’t really all that new but they can show you some really cool stuff! Seriously, this is the coolest thing I’ve ever seen.
Our little baby is gonna be an acrobat or something, she sure is active and flexible! You can almost make out her face if you watch closely.
I just wish the offices would catch up with their technology. We’re forced to record the Ultrasounds on VHS. Seriously… VHS. We even bought a 4 pack of them (smallest available) from Target for the first one and it was like $8! All we do with them is convert them from VHS->DVD for archival storage and then rip the DVD->Computer for your enjoyment and our viewing purposes (we’re all digital).
Thanks to Greg I now know I have one real job to do as a father.
Just one, hopefully I can get this one right…
The 2010 Saranac Lake Winter Carnival is about to kick off and I was planning on stopping by. My parents visited the Ice Castle last year and I never got the chance so it was on the list for this year. You can see a Time Lapse of the build from last year below:
They started building the one for this year this past week and you can watch the progress on the Webcam below (updated every few seconds):
With all the rain and the warm temperatures… It doesn’t look good for the palace, but here’s hoping it only slowed the process and didn’t kill it.
Hope I get to see it this year.
A man and a woman had a little baby,
Yes, they did.
They had three in the family,
And that’s a magic number.
Gotta say, we’re excited. We’ve got a little’n on the way.
Yep, a little baby Aldrich.
Rachel is about 4 months Pregnant right now. Naturally we’ve known for a while but we wanted to wait to share until we had something to share.
Yes we know what it is (maybe you can tell from the video) and yes we have the name picked out. However; you’ll have to wait and see. That’ll keep you reading though right?
Baby Aldrich @ 18 weeks:
And, the video of when we told my in-laws:
UPDATE: The video of my in-laws might need an explanation. We gave them a photo-book of our dogs. The first picture had a label on it “The Grandkids” and the last picture was of the pregnancy test.
Good stuff, Pumped.
Simply awesome music video for Bohemian Rhapsody by the Muppets.
Those who make peaceful revolution protest impossible, make violent revolution protest inevitable ~JFK
I’m not sure how I missed this but it seems last Wednesday October 7th there was a protest by the Students for a Democratic Society in Downtown Rochester NY that ended in a lot of violence and brutality.
If you read section 240.20 of the New York State Penal Code it’s pretty clear that the protesters broke the law. To me it’s also pretty clear that the police overstepped their bounds.
Although it’s pretty hard to tell exactly what happened, it’s pretty easy to see the police were excessively violent. Two protesters were even sent to the hospital and 12 were arrested by brutal means like throwing them to the ground. The video clearly shows several officers pushing and shoving, yelling, screaming and pulling out their billy clubs.
Frankly, I don’t see how this type of blatant power trip can be tolerated. They should all be fired.
The following is a press conference the SDS gave after the protest. There’s tons more interviews and articles about the SDS protest online if you’re interested in reading more.
Found an awesome Lipdub from 172 Communication students at the University of Quebec at Montreal (UQAM). Reminds me of the Flagpole Sitta Lipdub from a while back.
