RIT Big Shot 37 and Others

It’s been a minute. We missed you!
Last weekend we got to participate in RIT Big Shot 37

While reviewing the older Big Shots I realized we’ve actually been to quite a few!

RIT Big Shot 27

I made it to the 27th RIT Big Shot last night.  The venue would have been perfect for the whole family this time but we felt everybody is still a little young to be out that late during the week since so they had to sit this one out.

This is hands down the most people I’ve seen at a Big Shot yet.  I’ve heard it was somewhere around 1500 but I wouldn’t be surprised if it was more than that.  The entire SeaBreeze park was packed, It seemed like there were hundreds of people assigned to each of the lighting areas.

As always, the picture was online before I had a chance to check (ya gotta love Digital Photography). I thought it came out beautifully but check it out for yourselves below:

I managed to sneak my own picture (handheld as they didn’t allow tripods in) with one hand while lighting things up with my other:

Sorry it’s a little shaky 😦 I still thought it came out pretty neat.

Snowstorm in Fairport

Took a little walk with my Camera and MonoPod tonight.  It was my first time using a Monopod and it’s alright, but I couldn’t drag the shutter as much as I wanted to so I had to crank the ISO a bit more than I’d like for pictures like these.  Ahh well, turned out ok anyway.  Kinda fun to shoot too.

I love the snow and I love snow storms. They make Fairport so pretty.  Glad I took the time to go out even if it was for only a few minutes.

Advances in Digital Photography in Space

Holy Wow!

NewScientist had an article a little while ago on the advancement of digital imagry in space.  It’s amazing!  I had no idea that we were that far along back in 1974. Even though first digital camera I had (newer by 26 years) beats the socks off the first space image, it’s still impressive considering it was taken from a spaceship and transmitted back to earth in 1974.

What’s even more impressive, is how far we’ve come since then.  The Hubble Deep Space image is a long exposure of only a tiny little section of space that reveals just how small we really are in relation to what’s out there.  The image shows thousands of other galaxies, some which appear to be much larger than our own Milky Way.

I can’t wait to see what another 30 years will bring.

RIT Big Shot 25

BigShot25Today was RIT’s 25th Big Shot, of the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C..  I loved being a part of it last year, but this year I’m glad I skipped the trip to DC.  To be honest, I’m not really a fan of this one.  Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing I see technically wrong with the photo.  It just seems like an uninteresting subject to me.

I loved last years though, which was the first one I participated in, and many of the other Big Shots.

RIT Big Shot 24

RIT has been doing what they call the Big Shot every year since 1987. They pick a point of interest and take a long exposure photograph using only flashlights and electronic flashes for illumination. This years Big Shot was located in Pittsford NY at Schoen Place to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the Erie Canal.

The Erie Canal was originally proposed in 1808…On July 4, 1817, Governor Dewitt Clinton broke ground for the construction of the canal…it was often sarcastically referred to as ‘Clinton’s Big Ditch’

Rachel and I heard about this a while ago and decided to go. It was fun. I was impressed to come home and see the photograph already online so for your viewing pleasure it is included below.

If you’re interested in seeing past Big Shots check them out here.
