Genesee Bike Ride

Preferred Care is putting on what they call Nature Nights every Tuesday at 6pm from May 26th through August 25th.  These nights include biking, (canoe) paddling, hiking and walking in the different areas Rochester has to offer.

Tuesday Rachel and I, along with my mother and several other of their coworkers, participated in a 10 (ish) mile bike ride along the Genesee River.  We started at the Seneca Park Zoo parking lot.  From there we crossed a walking/riding bridge to the other side of the Genesee.  We rode along Lake ave for a short distance and then through Turning Point Park.  From there we rode on to Ontario Beach Park.  We took a short break at abbots and then headed back along the same route.  Some people got a longer break than others, due to a lost rider… but that’s a story for another day.

I intended to record video of the whole thing.  However; the battery in my camera died after crossing the bridge so this is all I got:

The pace was very leisurely (a bit slow for my taste) but it was a great ride with a great group.  Everyone was very friendly and we’ll probably participate again.

Enjoy some  of the scenery the Genesee Riverway Trail has to offer below.  Please note, these were shot with my iPhone so the quality is a little… well the quality is little.

My First Flickr Meetup

Saturday I participated in my first Flickr meet up. It was a lot of fun. Myself and a group of 12 or so other photography hobbyists met up at Dinosaur BBQ in Downtown Rochester for a hearty lunch. Then we were off to explore the Abandoned Subway. If you don’t know anything about the subway I suggest checking out the RocWiki Page and reading up a bit. It’s actually quite interesting and may become a part of downtown Rochester again soon.

The slideshow below showcases all the photos the participants have shared. These are not only my photographs, they are the photographs taken by all participants of the event.

Eugene de Salignac

Eugene de Salignac was the official photographer for the NYC Department of Bridges from 1906 to 1934. His collection of photographs was recently uncovered and, as it turns out, de Salignac was a great photographer and his photographs charted the progress of New York growing into a big city. The New Yorker has a slideshow of some of his photos and there was recently an exhibit of his work at the Museum of the City of New York.

I wonder if there was a photographer that charted the progress of Rochester growing into a great city? I wonder if he also charted the progress of Rochester dying into the crime infested nothing it is today?

WordPress 2.3

wplogoWordPress 2.3 has been out for a while but I’ve been hesitant to upgrade. I finally decided it was time. RandyAldrich.net was running on 2.1.2 until now and I thought the upgrade might not go as smoothly as it should. As with any upgrade I did a database backup and instead of overwriting the install directory I created a new one (randyaldrich.upgrade). Once I was satisfied that I had all configuration, plug-ins, themes and uploads transferred to the new directory I simply deactivated all my plug-ins, switched the directory names and ran the upgrade script. It went perfectly smooth. So smooth that I also upgraded R & R today.

Along with the upgrade I always do some general house cleaning. Remove any plugins no longer used, upgrade any plug-ins which have upgrades available. I like to embed videos with my posts now and then and WordPress does not make this easy. Because of this I have been using Viper’s Video Quicktags for quite some time now and recently realized I was 2 versions behind. The new versions provide some nice enhancements and fixes to issues I have been noticing.

All in all. A good upgrade. I highly recommend it.

I often hear humorous stories at work (and even participate in certain circumstances) and always intend on sharing them with people. It never turns out that way though, I either forget or lack the motivation to use my extremely limited artistic ability to create the appropriate representation. Today I ran across Strip Generator which allows you to create a comic very easily. They have many baked in characters, objects, shapes and so on which allows you to throw together a comic in literally seconds. I took the opportunity to share this little story I heard from a coworker
