Timelapse Junkie

I’m a timelapse junkie.  I like creating them, I like watching them, I find (good ones) absolutely stunning.  Not sure when this started but it is what it is.

Recently I’ve noticed a whole slew of them popping up on the ‘tubes and I thought I’d share a few of the good ones.   You’ve probably seen at least one or two of them.   I can watch them all over and over again though, and I’d bet I”m not the only one.

American News is Fundamentally Warped

We live in a fast paced media filled world.  Sometimes it’s hard to forget the rest of the world doesn’t really have access to the same outlets we do.  As Americans sometimes it seems like the latest story about Bieber or Britney is the most important thing going on in the world right now.

It.

Never.

Is.

The following TED talk by Alisa Miller is only 4 minutes and has some pretty good illustrations of how and why America’s view of the world can be so warped sometimes:

NOTE: if you’re reading this in a feed-reader and the above video is not displayed, please view the original post.

Even if you don’t watch the video, I think this is an important take-away:

Is this distorted world view what we want for Americans in our increasingly interconnected world? ~Alisa Miller

While this TED talk was from 2008, today at TEDx Rochester is the first I’ve seen of it and it struck a chord.  Not that I didn’t already know our news coverage is warped, but I think this is an excellent illustration to drive home the point.

Vintage Computers

Just saw a slideshow by TIME titled ‘Core Memory: Photographs of Vintage Computers‘. This stuff is immensely interesting to me, both as a Photographer and a computer geek.

My favorite (pictured below) is the picture of Core Memory.  You can essentially picture this as the grandfather of flash memory today (the stuff you stick in your digital camera or phone).  Technology is insane.

Be sure to click through to see all the pictures.

NOTE: imate originally seen on TIME’s website.

Space Monkey News

Ricky Gervais was on The Daily Show Monday night and they showed a short clip from the new HBO show ‘The Ricky Gervais Show.’  It looked hilarious so I took a look around the net and was able to find some of the videos.  The Space Monkey Monkey News video was particularly hilarious.

Rachel and I haven’t laughed this hard in years.  Seriously, there were tears… Watch it!

It may be a little hard to follow unless you’re already familiar with Karl Pilkington or at least know he’s really this dumb.  Then again we didn’t know anything about him until we saw some of the Ricky Gervais videos so you’ll probably do just fine too.

Advances in Digital Photography in Space

Holy Wow!

NewScientist had an article a little while ago on the advancement of digital imagry in space.  It’s amazing!  I had no idea that we were that far along back in 1974. Even though first digital camera I had (newer by 26 years) beats the socks off the first space image, it’s still impressive considering it was taken from a spaceship and transmitted back to earth in 1974.

What’s even more impressive, is how far we’ve come since then.  The Hubble Deep Space image is a long exposure of only a tiny little section of space that reveals just how small we really are in relation to what’s out there.  The image shows thousands of other galaxies, some which appear to be much larger than our own Milky Way.

I can’t wait to see what another 30 years will bring.
